Dear BIOM and FST students,
Our three-week module Socio-Technical System Transformation is scheduled from Monday, June 16th to Friday, July 4th 2025.
On Monday, 16.6, we will start with the first part of the module Socio-technical system transformation at 9am in presence in the seminar room 11.015.
In the first week, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of-, and insights into, different innovation types, and approaches for innovation developing and testing, as part of broader transformation strategies. Guided by a system-based innovation understanding, you will be introduced first to conceptual insights of innovations and innovation systems, followed by different innovation and application examples, ranging from technical processes up to social innovation and cooperative forms of organisation.
In the second week, you will become acquainted with theories and concepts of transformation. You will learn about actors, strategies and governance of transformation processes. Of special interest are civil society organizations and social movements. You learn what a social movement is and about their part in transforming societies and stimulating rapid periods of cultural evolution. You will reflect upon the role of civic, private and public sector institutions in transformation processes towards sustainable development.
The third week brings a geographical perspective on transformation and deals with issues of urbanization, demography and protected areas. You will become familiar with effects of unintended and unplanned transformations, will see transformation developments along an urban-rural gradient, and discuss global versus local perspectives on transformation.
We will have some days and inputs in presence and others that are organised online, e.g. for reading and self-studies to deepen particular topic areas as well as question and answer sessions but also for guest presentations.
For online interactions in the first week (with Prof. Mann), we will meet in our FST virtual classroom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83107740053?pwd=c3c3MENYbklVM2tpQUZncGtlOUNtUT09
Each unit/day is accompanied by preparatory reading/deepening papers, which you find in the folder Literature in Moodle. References are provided in the course and in the syllabus.
All the best, enjoy!
Heike Walk, Erik Aschenbrand, and Carsten Mann
