Dear Students,
We hope you are well. We are currently working on finalising the detailed programme of our excursion to Romania, and look forward to an exciting trip with you.
To discuss the contents, logistics, and tasks before the excursion (forming examination groups, manadatory readings before the course, etc.), we want to invite you to a preparatory meeting on Thursday, April 3 at 4pm until approx. 5:30pm.
The meeting will be held in hybrid format (room on Waldcampus will be announced soon), the link for online participation is the following: https://bbb.hnee.de/b/mic-m7p-dqz-srt
We look forward to seeing you there, were there will be the opportunity to discuss all kinds of logistical and content-related questions you might have.
In addition, Lars has prepared some detailed instruction regarding the travel arrangements, see below. As announced earlier, each of you is responsible themselves for booking their train or bus ticket or other means of transportation.
Best wishes
Michael Spies and Lars Schmidt

Dear participants to this year's excursion to Romania,
in the following, you'll find information on arrival and departure dates and times as well as suggestions on how to get there. Please read carefully and make sure your travel arrangements match those dates / times. If in doubt, please contact me at lars.schmidt@gmx.org.
- You need to be at Brasov main station (train), Romania, on Sunday May 18, at 1 pm (13:00) local time. We will be picked up at this time and location and travel together by bus to the starting point of the excursion.
- You should not arrive any later, but you may arrive any time earlier at your convenience and expense and spend time in Brasov or elsewhere in Romania.
- On Saturday May 24, a bus will transfer us to Brasov main station (train), estimated time of arrival at Brasov main station is between noon and 2 pm. You may travel back to Germany or elsewhere on this day or any other day at your own convenience and expense.
Recommended travel arrangement:
- Michael Spies and I will travel by train using an interrail 4-day global pass mobile. Your are invited to join us, here's the itinerary:
Going there: Saturday May 17, 8:54 Eberswalde Hbf, arrival Berlin Hbf 9:28 with RE3. Departure Berlin Hbf 10:04 with ICE 93, arrival Vienna Hbf at 18:40. Departure Vienna Hbf 19:42 with EC/D/NZ 347 night train, arrival Brasov main station 12:49 on Sunday May 18.
Return trip: Sunday May 24, 17:46 Brasov main station with NZ/D/EC 346, arrival 8:20 Vienna Hbf on Sunday May 25. Departure Vienna Hbf 09:35 with ICE 92, arrival Berlin Hbf 17:57. Departure Berlin Hbf 18:33, arrival Eberswalde Hbf 19:07 on May 25.
If you book ordinary tickets, please keep in mind that Deutsche Bahn Tickets labeled as 'Super Sparpreis' are not refundable ('Sparpreis' and 'Flex' tickets are refundable). If you choose the interrail 4-day global pass mobile, please be aware of the following:
- don't activate the pass until the day of departure!
- If you are a non-EU citizen, please check if you rather need a Eurail pass. https://www.interrail.eu/en/support/interested-in-interrailing/do-i-need-an-interrail-or-eurail-pass
- The interrail pass is only the ticket, you still need to buy seat reservations for the ICE Berlin-Vienna (and return) and the night train from Vienna to Brasov (and return). For the latter, there are different options. In order of pricing: Seat, couchette coach (6 bunk beds), sleeper (2-3 people). While you can book the ICE seat reservations through the DB Navigator app or at https://www.bahn.de, booking ONLY the reservation for the night train is more complicated. You can do this at Eberswalde Hbf Ticket Office (if the operator doesn't know how to do it, ask for a guy called Carsten!) or at any DB Reisebüro in Berlin, e.g. at Gesundbrunnen or Berlin Hbf.
Alternatives are Flixbus or other long distance coaches. We encourage you to not travel by airplane to avoid CO2 emissions!
We will soon be in touch again to schedule a kick-off meeting.
Best regards
Lars
